The first castles and fortresses in Finland appeared after the Swedish
crusade in Finland.
The first castle built in today’s Finland was probably the Turku castle
built around 1280. Turku was followed by many other medieval castles like Hame Castle, Viipuri
Castle or Raseborg Castle.
During the 18th century many forts were built in southern Finland to protect
the newly formed Swedish-Russian border. Some of these forts include Fort Slava or Svartholm Fortress or the maritime Fortress of
Suomenlinna
