Short History
Belmonte Castle was built in the 15th and 16th
centuries over older remains. It consists of a 20 metres high keep, a gate with an adjacent
tower and scattered remains of the enclosure.
It was owned by Juan Manuel, counsillor of Kind Henry IV in 1458, the
following centuries passed to the Count of Onate and the Marquis of Montealegre.
The keep was enlarged in the early 16th century and it never saw any
fighting.
The exterior of the Belmonte Castle is free to visit
but access inside is hard.
