Construction on the Capitolio Nacional in Bolívar Square began in 1847, but political upheavals kept it from being completed until 1926.
Capitolio Nacional History
The National Capitol is the meeting place for both houses of the Congress of Colombia.
The Elliptic Chamber of the Capitol building contains a mural, created in the fresco style, depicting Simón Bolívar and Franciso de Paula Santander (Bolívar’s associate) leaving the Cucuta Congress during the creation of Gran Colombia (a short-lived Colombian Republic that existed from 1819 to 1831).
The National Capitol of Bogota was designed by Danish architect, Thomas Reed.
