Torosay Castle History
Torosay Castle is really just a Victorian baronial mansion, dating from 1858 and designed by David Bryce. Originally known as Duart House, it was renamed Torosay when Duart Castle was restored.
It was built for John Campbell but the expense forced him to sell it in 1865. The Guthrie family, whose descendants, later Guthrie-James, purchased it, and still owns it.
The Castle Today
Torosay is a family castle, and visitors are invited to make themselves at home. The information notices are often humorous.
The gardens extend to 12 acres and include a statue walk, various terraces, and the Japanese Garden. A narrow gauge railway can be used to reach the castle from near Craignure Pier.
