Rundāle Palace History

Rundale Palace was designed as a summer residence for the Duke of Courland E. J. Biron by F. B. Rastrelli and is the most magnificent example of Baroque architecture in Latvia.

It was built in the middle of the 18th century. The southern part of the Rundale palace is a formal Baroque garden.

Rundāle Palace Visitor Info

The Duchess’ boudoir, representative halls, and one part of the Duke’s apartments are open to visitors. From May 2000 the exhibition “Duke Peter, House of Biron and Courland’s Legends” is open in the Duke’s living quarters and on the second-floor exhibition halls.

There is an exhibition “Art Treasures in Rundāle” on the first floor of the palace. During the summer season the exhibition “Time of Mystery”(The fate of Latvian Evangelic Lutheran churches during the years of Soviet power) is open in the stables of the palace and the exhibition “Restoration of the French formal park in Rundāle” is open in the gardener’s house.

The palace houses a restaurant that is also open to visitors.
