Although most of the castles can be found in
Europe, there are plenty of them all around the world. Many of these castles were built
by Europeans, but castles existed in other parts of the world without any European
influence.
For example in Japan, the castles were made of
wood and stone. The Himeji Castle in Japan still stands today and provides us an insight
into a different world of castles.
Some of these castles are old crusader castles
like the Krak des Chevaliers in Syria. In Latin America many of
the castles were built by the Spanish to protect their new territories from the pirates and
the British, like the case of Morro Castle in Havana.
In Africa, some of the castles, like the
Elmina Castle have a dark history as they were used as a slave
trade center.
From this page you can discover the story of
the castles in the world, by visiting the page of every country listed. And although
castles outside Europe are less known, they surely have a fascinating story to
tell.
