Bedfordshire has fewer castles than other regions in England because of its
positioning. Most of the surviving forts and castles in Bedfordshire are not well preserved
or are in ruins.
The most famous fortifications and castles in Bedfordshire include the
Bedford Castle (situated in Bedford), the Someries Castle located near
Luton or the former Eastcotts Castle in the village with the same name.
Although Bedfordshire castles neither abound nor are spectacular, some of
the castles have a long history dating back to the period immediately after the Norman
invasion.
